A visit from BGS- what volcanic hazards are there?

We had another exciting visit from Marli!

This afternoon, the children were bursting to share their new knowledge of volcanoes and earthquakes!

We spent this afternoon learning about the volcanic hazards that people face when living in volcanic areas, such as lava flows, pyroclastic flows and lahars. We also looked at famous volcanoes such as Volcano Fuego in Guatamala, Sakurajima in Japan, as well as the earthquake risks in Iceland currently.

Following on from this, we designed our own cities that included a volcano and thought about the benefits locals receive, such as fertile soil, tourism and minerals. We also thought about the risks posed, such as loss of homes, habitats and farmland.

I have attached the slides Marli kindly showed us this afternoon for you to have a look at. There are some fantastic pictures of real life volcanoes and earthquakes!
