What did we learn in spring 2?

What did we learn about during Spring 2?

We have had a super busy half-term. Please see here to find out the events we took part in.

What have we learnt during Spring 2?

Literacy: Non-chronological reports

In Literacy, we have finished writing our non-chronological reports based on mythical creatures. The children have enjoyed learning our model text, the 'River Unicorn'as it is vital for children to be able to be able to recall a text before writing and understand the format, layout and vocabulary. During this unit we created list poems, compound nouns, similes, expanded noun phrases and focused on features of non-chronological reports. We then used our 'toolkit' to innovate (change) parts of the 'River Unicorn' text and innovated each sub-heading. This is something Y3 have become confident in doing and are becoming more independent, which is a joy to see.  In the final few weeks we started planning our own mythical creature report and wrote our very own non-chronological report (please see some of the wonderful examples above). The children also shared their stories with their friends and were incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication!

Reading:

In reading, we finished our class text 'The Iron Man' which the children enjoyed listening to. We have also focused on our inference skills in our vipers lessons here are some examples of inference style questions:

Spelling:

In spelling, we have covered 4 units and primarily focused on suffixes and prefixes-we have learnt how to use the suffix '-ion' as well as the prefixes 're-', 'anti-' and 'super-'. It is super important that the children reinforce and consolidate their learning through practising their assigned doodlepsell extras. I also assign red ( high frequency words) and orange words (words that are statutory spellings for Y3/4) weekly. Little and often is the best way to learn these.

Maths: Mass, capacity & fractions:

Fractions Explained - A Guide for Parents

In Maths, we finished our unit on mass and capacity and learnt how to measure length in centimetres (cm), millimetres (mm) and metres, weight in grams (g) and kilograms (kg) as well as how to measure capacity in millilitres (ml) and litres (L). We have nearly finished our unit on fractions and have learnt about unit and non-unit fractions as well as using fraction walls to compare and order fractions. We're doing great on our doodles, please continue to complete doodlemaths extras as this will help to consolidate and reinforce our learning. It is also important that Y3 continue to learn and practice their 2, 5, 10, 3 , 4 and 8 timetables as this will support their Maths throughout their time in school and beyond. You may wish to use doodletables to support this or practice fluency and recall here .

Science: Forces & magnets

We finished our Science unit based on 'forces and magnets'. We have covered a variety of enquiry questions such as: What is a force and how do we know when forces are at work?, we have taken part in experiments to learn about how objects move on different surfaces and learnt about friction. In addition to this, we learnt about what a magnet is and took part in experiments to learn about magnetic poles and  when magnets repel and attract. For our final lesson, we looked at what materials are magnetic, and we learnt that not all metals are magnetic!

History: Who first lived in Britain?

We have now completed our unit on the Bronze and Iron Age- during our trip to Beaumanor we saw a Iron Age house! Y3 have thoroughly enjoyed learning about: when the Bronze Age was and why it was called the Bronze Age, how bronze changed the lives of many people who lived in Britain, the significance of discovering the Amesbury Archer as well as when the Iron Age was, who lived during the Iron Age and why hillforts were so important to the Iron Age people. The children have been incredibly curious learners throughout our History unit!

Music:

The Antidote: A Reading of 'From a Railway Carriage' by Robert Louis Stevenson | The Epoch Times

We had a full music day in our final weeks of Spring 2 we focused on 'music from a railway carriage' and '3 notes' we learnt about different rhythms and beats!
