Antarctic talk

We learnt about going to the Antarctic on an expedition last week!

We had a talk from Steve who has been to the Antarctic several times on expeditions. He told us all about the important work that scientists and researchers do when they're there as well as lots of information about penguins!

Here are some of the facts that he told us:

  • People can visit the antarctic as tourists but it costs between £5000 and £10,000!
  • There are lots of different jobs that people who go to the antarctic do such as scientists, pilots, plumbers, but everyone gets involved in everything including the cooking and cleaning.
  • Boiling water freezes instantly if spilt outside.
  • Penguins can hold their breath for up to 30 minutes.
  • Penguins don't see humans as a threat, only animals that could attack them in the water, like the leopard seal.
  • A penguin's eyesight is much better under water than it is on land.
  • If a human were to lie down to take a photo of a penguin, they would think they were a seal!

Over the last few years, a crack has been forming on the part of the ice shelf in the antarctic that British researchers are based. They had to change their location and only a couple of weeks ago, the crack went right the way through the ice shelf and a part broke off to form an iceberg. The iceberg would cover the whole of Nottingham and part of the surrounding areas to give you an idea of its size!
