This week, Year 3 explored the poem The Magic Box by Kit Wright. The children were first introduced to the poem during Mrs King’s whole school assembly, where they listened to it aloud, discussed its rich and imaginative language, and shared ideas about what magical items they would place in their own boxes and why those items held special meaning.

In our first classroom session, we read the poem together as a class and then in pairs. Using flipcharts, the children brainstormed magical things they would include in their boxes. We then grouped their ideas into five categories: fantasy creatures, nature, memories, feelings, and around the world.

During our second and third sessions, we focused on the poem’s structure and layout. The children began crafting and innovating their own magical box poems, incorporating the poetic style and imaginative ideas. As all great writers do, they edited and improved their drafts before writing up their final versions.
These wonderful poems will soon be displayed around the school so keep your eyes peeled for some truly magical writing! The children have poured creativity and effort into their work throughout the week, and they should feel incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved.
