To link with our Ancient Maya history topic, we have been learning about the food they had during Ancient Maya times and which foods are still around today. Maize (corn) was very important to the Ancient Maya people – they even had a god for it! They were also very skilled farmers and grew lots of their own crops. Tortillas were a very popular food during Ancient Maya times as they were made using maize flour. They also grew lots of vegetables which meant they could make guacamole and salsa – they grew different types of chili pepper so both dips would have been spicy.
Y6 split into different groups and designed their own salsa or guacamole, thinking about which ingredients they wanted to include. They then followed a recipe to make tortillas and used their own recipe to make their dip.
Have a look at us all making our tortillas and dips below!
