Year 4’s Perlethorpe Adventure: Anglo-Saxons and Vikings!

Year 4 had an unforgettable trip to Perlethorpe, where they stepped back in time to explore the fascinating worlds of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings!

To begin the day, the children fully embraced the experience by dressing up in traditional tunics. This really helped bring history to life! They were even given their own Viking names and discovered the meanings behind them—an activity that sparked lots of curiosity and excitement.

Our first stop was the Anglo-Saxon house, where pupils learned all about Anglo-Saxon life, including how people lived, worked, and survived. Following this, the children took part in an exciting challenge: using maps to navigate the area and hunt for hidden Anglo-Saxon runes. By working together and reading the clues carefully, they were able to piece together the runes to spell out a mysterious word—great teamwork and problem-solving all round!

After a well-earned lunch break, it was time to dive into Viking life. At the Viking house, pupils learned about how Vikings lived and trained. They then took part in a range of hands-on activities, including making Viking jewellery and even grinding flour—just as the Vikings once did.

The fun didn’t stop there! The children had a go at Viking-themed games, such as “keepy-uppy” with a Viking shield, which tested their coordination and balance. One of the highlights of the day was trying on Viking armour and holding real equipment, including swords and heavy chain mail—everyone was amazed at just how heavy it was!

It was a fantastic day filled with learning, exploration, and lots of fun. The children represented the school brilliantly, showing enthusiasm, curiosity, and excellent behaviour throughout.

A wonderful experience that we won’t forget anytime soon!
