Friday saw Partake History’s second visit to Ride Class to deliver and enrichment day set around the Ancient Egyptians.

The day began with Mr Adby establishing how much the class already knew (which was actually quite a lot) and then expanding their knowledge with new information. He introduced the term cartouche and drew Tutenkhamun’s cartouche. He also talked them through the process of mummifcation and showed them a piece of papyrus which showed the ceremnony of the weighing of the heart. Next, he shared with them artefacts that would accompany the mummified body to the afterlife.

After break, the children explored spices that the Ancient Egyptians would have used (many of which are still used today). These included cinnamon, corriander and cumin as well as frankincense and myrrh.

He rounded off the morning by transforming Yordana into an Egyptian princess, explaining the purpose of the make-up (to protect their skin from the hot desert climate) and also talking about the type of clothes that would have been worn: for most children this was absolutely nothing!

In the afternoon, the children designed their own cartouche whilst Mr Adby set up the hall for the drama that we were to participate in.

The drama was an Egyptian burial ceremony, celebrating the sudden death of a young prince. The children dressed up and really bought into the whole experience: their gasp when the final tomb was revealed was truely magical.

Once again – an amazing day with Mr Adby from Partake. Take a look at the phots of the whole day.
