Year 3 had a wonderful time celebrating National Poetry Week! Our poetry work was inspired by The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane, with a special focus on the magpie.

We began by becoming magpie experts! We researched these fascinating birds and watched videos to observe how they move, behave and look. Kahlo class particularly enjoyed listening to the unusual magpie call!

Next, we explored a model poem together and worked as a class to innovate it, sharing ideas and experimenting with language. We then used everything we had learned to create our own draft, carefully choosing words and phrases to bring our magpies to life.

Finally, after editing and improving their work, the children produced their finished poems in their very best handwriting and decorated them with beautiful magpie illustrations.

I was so impressed by their creativity, imagination and especially their beautiful handwriting!
