This half term, Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed combining their Art and Geography learning through our exciting topic, The Deep Blue Abyss. We explored the mysteries of the deep ocean while developing a range of artistic skills inspired by the work of the famous artist Paul Klee.

To begin our learning, we looked closely at some of Paul Klee’s artwork and discussed how he used colour, shape and imagination to create interesting scenes. We then learnt about some of the amazing creatures that live in the deepest parts of the ocean, identifying and researching fascinating animals from the dark depths of the sea.

Using sketch pencils, the children practised a range of drawing techniques before creating detailed sketches of their chosen deep-sea creatures. They worked hard to improve their observational drawing skills by using quick, light sketching lines and carefully adding shading to create texture and depth.

Next, we experimented with watercolours to create our own underwater backgrounds inspired by Paul Klee’s artistic style. The children explored how to make tints by adding water to paint and worked with a restricted colour palette to create beautiful ocean scenes. They showed great creativity while mixing colours and thinking carefully about the moods and effects they wanted to achieve.

Once their backgrounds were complete, the children added their detailed sea creature sketches to their underwater scenes. The final pieces showcased both their growing artistic skills and their knowledge of the creatures that inhabit the deep ocean.

At the end of the topic, we had some extra time to work together on a special whole-class drawing of the ocean. This collaborative piece allowed everyone to contribute their ideas and celebrate all that we had learned throughout the unit.

We are incredibly proud of the effort, creativity and perseverance shown by all of Year 4. Please take a look at the photographs below to see our fantastic artwork and our whole-class ocean drawing! 🌊🐠🎨
