Dragons Roar!

WELCOME:

At the end of another year at KPNS we wanted to thank all the families at KPNS for their support over the last 12 months. Your children are wonderful and, once again, have been a pleasure to work with in school. For those children moving on from KPNS we wish them every success in the future – we expect to hear great things about them in the future!

As we look forward to September, the staff are excited about the new class structure we have in place and the plans we have for enhancing all parts of the children’s curriculum: the children will experience an exciting new approach to topics, new approaches to teaching reading and new resources to support their learning in maths. All this in smaller classes - we are pulling out all the stops to make help our children make even more progress!

We always work hard to give the children a broad and rich curriculum that values sport, music, drama and as much practical and hands on learning as possible. In that context we are delighted that the results we report nationally at the end of Reception, in the Y1 phonics screen, and in Y2 SATs have all improved from last year. Furthermore, KS2 SATs show that the rates of progress made by our Y6 pupils have improved from last year in reading and writing and are in-line in maths – a real testimony to their hard working and positive attitude to school.

Blaze’s Reading Lair:

We all know how important it is for children to read regularly at home but often parents report that reading after school is tricky because children are tired or they have busy evenings full of social activities. To support with this, we have decided to open our doors earlier in a morning so parents can come and read with their child before school. From September Blaze’s Reading Lair will be open every day from 8:30am for parents to come in and read with their children. They can read their own reading books or choose from a range of fantastic books we will have on display. All children must be accompanied by an adult and can enter the lair via the KS2 backdoor. They will then make their way to their classrooms at 8:55am.

School Uniform:

It’s that time of year when everyone is rushing out to buy new school uniform. Please double check our uniform list under the ‘parents and carers’ section on the website. Please remembers our uniform includes black shoes, not trainers (not even black ones).

We have limited room in our cloakrooms so children in Y1-3 should bring their PE kits in a SMALL bag and their books in a Keyworth Primary School book bag (which can be purchased from the school office for £4). Children in Y4-6 can bring a SMALL rucksack containing their books and PE kit. Also, a reminder that we do not allow pencil cases in to school as we provide everything the children need for their lessons.

New system for lining up in September:

From September there will be no lining up on the playground before school. This decision has been made to reduce the congestion going in to school on a morning, ensuring the children get settled in to lessons as soon as possible. A member of staff will be on the back door between 8:50 and 9am. The children can arrive at school and go straight in to their classrooms where the teachers will be waiting for them. All children should be in their classrooms by 9am when the register will be taken. Anyone arriving after 9am will have to go through the school office, where they will be marked as late.

For children in Y1/2 (Mrs Betts and Mrs Lindley’s Class) there are slightly different arrangements. The children will be let in through the Dragon’s Den entrance by Miss Waugh between 8:50 and 9am. This will give the children chance to settle in to class calmly and enable parents to pass any messages to Miss Waugh. At the end of the school day, the children will be released from the usual Y1/2 classroom door

Feedback

Thank you to those who offered feedback about our parenting courses that we had proposed to run here at school. It’s all useful information for when planning such events in the future.

Leavers’ Assembly – Friday 20th July 9:15am

You are all invited to our end of year assembly this Friday at 9:15am in the school hall. This is a special assembly where we celebrate the past year in school and say our goodbyes to our Year 6 children and staff members who are leaving. Bring some tissues! We aim to finish at approximately 10:15am, although if parents who don't have children in Year 6 wish to leave before the Year 6 DVD then they are welcome to do so. Equally, they are also welcome to stay!

Thank you:

Along with all the staff you see on a day to day basis working hard to nurture and grow your children academically and in the pastoral sense, we have a whole host of amazing people who work behind the scenes. We would like to express our thanks to our wonderful Friends of KPNS who put on fundraising events the whole year round to help us offer exciting experiences such as the pantomime. Also many thanks to all the volunteers who help in school offering reading, singing, knitting and gardening- your support is appreciated more than we can express! Our final thanks go to our Governors who work tirelessly to support the school’s ongoing development.
