  • Summer Term Two: Key Information

    Published 06/06/25, by Mel Harris

Welcome back to the final term of the academic year.

This half term our topic is Awful Egyptians and we will be exploring the Big Idea - What have we learned from the Ancient Egyptians? As part of this topic, we will be looking at the following questions:

    • Who were the Ancient Egyptians and when were they around?
    • What roles were there in an Ancient Egyptian society and how did this impact on the achievements of the Egyptians?
    • What can we learn about  Egyptian beliefs of the afterlife from mummies?
    • Why did the Egyptians settle near the River Nile?
    • What can we learn about the Egyptian civilization through their inventions and their uses today?
    • What can we learn about Pharaoh burials from one dig?

As part of this, I have booked Partake History to do an Egyptian Day for us. They will be visiting us on Thursday 10th July.  During this day the children will:

    • re-create the scents and aromas of Ancient Egypt
    • investigate and handle artefacts used in mummification
    • discover the clothing and makeup of an Egyptian princess
    • create a cartouche
    • dress up and take part in a stunning and atmospheric ‘burial ceremony’ where the story unfolds through the use of costume, narration, mime, music, dance and drama

In order to contribute towards the cost of the visit, the cost to you will be £12Please pay the £12 on Arbor by Wednesday 2nd July.

  • Jigsaw 'Changing Me' Unit: Key Information for Summer Two

    Published 21/05/25, by Mel Harris

    Dear Parent/Carer,

This school year we have been using ‘Jigsaw’, the PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) Programme across school, which follows a mindful approach to PSHE.

These lessons have built children’s emotional literacy, self-esteem, and knowledge of who they are and how they relate to each other and the world in a positive and healthy way. We are sure you will have heard about the Jigsaw Friends and Calm Me time.

The Summer Term Puzzles (units) are about Relationships (unit 1) and Changing Me (unit 2).  Next half-term after the holidays, we will be focussing on the Changing Me Puzzle which includes, in every year group, 2 or 3 lessons to help children understand the changes puberty brings and how human reproduction happens. There is a very serious safeguarding aspect to this work and obviously the younger year groups are not looking at these issues directly and explicitly, but rather learning correct terminology for body parts and covering the foundation work for later year groups. The Year 5 and 6 lessons look more fully at puberty and human reproduction.

  • Swift Class are Artists and Sculptors!

    Published 09/05/25, by Mel Harris

Over the past few weeks, Swift Class have been studying the architecture of Sir Christopher Wren.

They have looked at how he used symmetry and repeating patterns in his architecture.

They then looked closely at how to draw curved surfaces before studying Tudor chimney pots.

They then designed their own chimney pot which they created in clay. They developed their clay sculpting techniques by learning how to use a slip. They finally glazed their chimney pots with a mix of paint and PVA glue.

A huge thank you goes to Miss Waugh and Mrs Lees who led the actual clay sessions for me!

Welcome back to a brand-new term!

I hope you are all feeling refreshed after the Easter holidays!

The curriculum information and the knowledge organisers for both Geography and Science can be found as an attachment at the bottom of the blog.

What is our class text for this half-term?

Last half-term we focused on the book ‘Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho Yen, then began to read ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. This term we will be completing ‘Holes’  and then moving onto the modern children's classic ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ by J.K. Rowling. Feel free to purchase a copy if you would like your child to follow along in class.

  • Swift Class are Terrible Tudors!

    Published 20/03/25, by Mel Harris

We have had an amazing day with Mr Adby from Partake History.

We began our day with Mr Adby showing us lots of Tudor artifacts. The children were able to handle these and discuss what each could be. The children came up with lots of suggestions and were amazed and shocked (and sometimes mildly disgusted) by what they actually were used for. We then sketched some of the artefacts which allowed the children to look at them in even more detail.

Mr Adby then taught us how to dance like they did in Tudor times. We created long lines by holding hands and following the leader. We then learned how to bow and curtsey like ladies and gentlemen at the Tudor court, hearing some gruesome facts about lice in the gentlemen's hats! (That's why they didn't show the inside of them when removing them when bowing!)

It turns out that, as a class, we are very talented at Tudor dancing!

This week has been SciTech Week for all the schools in the Trust.

In Years 5 and 6, the children were set the task of designing and making a straw plane that would stay in the air for the furthest distance.

Together, we explored the design criteria and the variables that we could change.

The children had one sheet of A4 and one or more art straws. The variable they could change was:

    • add a wing
    • shorten or lengthen the straw
    • add more straws

  • Swift Class go to the WonderDome

    Published 08/02/25, by Mel Harris

Swift Class had a wonderful afternoon with Ben in the WonderDome mobile planetarium.

We watched a film which was all about the joint Space Agencies (NASA and the European Space Agency) project to put men (and women) back on the moon.

We watched footage of the Artemis spacecraft which is currently under construction at the huge NASA building at Cape Kennedy, Florida.

Next we watched simulations of the launch and subsequent landing on the moon.

We then took a trip through a nebula and watched the birth of a protostar and its development into a supergiant then its explosion.

  • WonderDome Mobile Planetarium

    Published 23/01/25, by Mel Harris

Linked to our science topic on The Earth in Space, Year Five are to have an exciting enrichment afternoon in two weeks' time.

The WonderDome mobile planetarium has been booked for the afternoon of Friday the7th February.

WonderDome provides an inspiring learning experience, which captivates all ages. An inflatable planetarium will be brought into school, where the knowledgeable presenter will set up in the Hall and provide an amazing planetarium show.

A WonderDome mobile planetarium is like a large domed tent, without a base. It is blown up with a large fan and everyone enters through the simple zip entrance. When it’s inflated, the equipment inside projects 360 degrees to reveal the wonders of the Universe.
