  • What Toys Did They Play With In The Past?

    Published 21/02/22, by Katie Sturman

Our new history topic for this half-term is called 'Childhood'. In this topic, we will be exploring the differences between the toys children played with in the past and the toys we play with now. By the end of the topic, we will know what is meant by the 'past' and be able to explain the concept of 'chronological order'.

Resources your child will need for this topic:
If possible, please could you send your child in with 3 photographs; one of them as a baby, one of them as a toddler and a recent photograph. It would be helpful if you could also send them in with 3 additional photos of a parent/grandparent as a baby, child and adult. We will place these photographs in chronological order along a personal timeline to help reinforce this very tricky concept. Your child will need these photos on 2.3.22.

An additional plea: If you have any toys that you enjoyed playing with as a child (and you wouldn't mind lending to Anning Class), we would be very grateful to explore these in our lessons beginning 9.3.22.

    Science
We will continue with the second half of our Animal Planet topic where we will learn the 5 animal categories and their features. The knowledge organiser for this unit is attached below to help you enhance your child's learning at home.

    General

    • You're all doing a fab job with your reading and Doodle maths! Keep it up and we may see another golden envelope coming our way!
    • We are changing the way we hand out our ReadWrite Inc reading books. Books will now be sent out on a Friday after your child has studied the story in school. The purpose of this is to help build their fluency and story-telling abilities.
    • Please encourage your child to borrow a book off our reading trolley at the start/end of the day - once the weather has calmed down I will be leaving the trolley outside the classroom for you to help yourselves to story books.
    • PE lessons are on Tuesday's and Thursday's. Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school on these days, including a warm change of clothes incase their session is outside.

  • Happy Half-Term

    Published 11/02/22, by Katie Sturman

Wow! We have had such a lovely last day before the half-term holidays!

The whole class loved the party games. We had a dance and played lots of fun games including musical statues, colour corners and sleeping lions. Take a look at our photos here.

All the children have done great work this half-term, and I am looking forwards to seeing you all on the 21st of February.

You think this half-term has been fun... just wait to see what I have got planned for you when we come back!

  • We have fun in Year 1

    Published 04/02/22, by Katie Sturman

In art this half-term we are designing and creating a dinosaur egg out of clay.

Last week, we started off by designing our egg using patterns which we practised beforehand.
This week, we made a dinosaur egg out of clay and used some tools to scratch in our designs.
Next week, we will apply our painting skills to decorate our eggs which should be dry enough to take home with us before half-term!

We all really enjoyed spending time together making our eggs (we even listened to some music and had a little dance).

    Do you like party games?

A couple of weeks ago, Anning Class received a golden envelope prize for being the best class on Doodle Maths for 3 weeks!

Our prize is a party games session, and we are all super excited for this. We are going to have our party session on Friday 11th February just before lunchtime.

Please can you still send your child into school in their school uniform on this day, and we will organise all the fun and games.

  • Exploring with our senses

    Published 18/01/22, by Katie Sturman

    Science
We are learning to explore the world with our senses. Last week, we looked at the senses sight and touch and this week we explored our sense of taste.
We tried a range of salty, sweet, sour and bitter foods then described the flavour and if we liked it, or didn't like it! Most of us loved the milk chocolate, but we were not fans of the dark chocolate! We were divided on whether we liked or disliked the lemon and most of us enjoyed the sweet taste of pineapple.

We know which body parts are linked with all of our 5 senses, and we are starting to realise that if one of our senses stop working, our other senses work twice as hard.

  • welcome back!

    Published 04/01/22, by Katie Sturman

    Welcome back Year 1!

I hope you have had a lovely Christmas break, and you're ready for all the fun we have planned for this half-term. I would like to say a big well done to those of you who have kept up with your reading and doodle maths over the holidays, it is lovely to see so many of you giving things a go at home.

Our topic for this half-term is called 'Animal Planet'.  Please see the letter attached which gives more detail about what this topic entails.

A few general reminders at the start of term:

    • Our spelling quiz will stay on a Friday with Mrs Lees. We will commence with set 7 spellings from Autumn 2 on Friday 7th January then make a start on Spring 1 set 1 the following week. The new spring spellings are listed on the topic letter.
    • ReadWrite Inc phonics books will be changed on a Monday. The reading trolley will be available every day for children to choose an additional story book.
    • We are now working towards our silver reading awards. You have up until the Easter holidays to complete this. On your marks, get set, GO!
    • Homework- Please continue to read with your child at least 3 times a week and sign their reading record to show you have done this. All children should be staying within the green zone on Doodlemaths. We will be working on numbers up to 20 this half term and I will be setting some additional Doodlemaths challenges to help embed the skills we have been learning in lessons.
    • In the New Year, please can all children be sent in with a spare set of clothes (including underwear, socks and tights). This is to ensure that we have an appropriate change of underwear available for if your child needs it. Please could you send these in in a labelled bag and I will keep them all safe.

    A message from Mrs King:
"I have noticed that lots of you have worked really hard to get in the green zone on your Doodlemaths this week! Well done. Now, I am a little bit tired of giving all the special Doodle treats to the children in KS2 so I am setting Anning Class a challenge. If you can have 80% of your class in the green zone for 3 weeks in a row, I will bring in my special golden envelopes so you can choose an amazing class surprise!

Miss Sturman will tell your parents about our special challenge but I need all of you to remember to do your doodles EVERY DAY! You can do it!"

Come on Annings, let's show Mrs King we can smash her special Year 1 challenge!

  • Merry Christmas!

    Published 17/12/21, by Katie Sturman

    Wow, what a term!

We have had a really awesome first term in Year 1 and have learnt lots of new and exciting things. Thank you for all the hard work you have put in.

Yesterday, I sent out a pack of work for numbers 11 - 20 which will be our main focus in maths after Christmas. If you have the time, it would be great if you could have a look at these with your children to get them familiar before we return.  Mrs King has also set a Christmas challenge on doodle for the chance to win a special doodle prize!

Please keep up with your reading over the Christmas holidays, I would love to hear all about your favourite books when we meet again in January.

Merry Christmas to all my children and their families.

    See you next year!

  • London past and present.

    Published 06/12/21, by Katie Sturman

We have had lots of fun learning about London in Anning class this half term.

We re-enacted The Great Fire of London by setting paper houses on fire to see how quickly the fire spread. We saw that the fire spread very quickly because it was windy, they were close together, and they were made out of flammable materials. We really enjoyed watching this and spoke about the difference in fire safety between now and 1666.

This week, we used our imaginations to go on a tour of London! We made our own train tickets and went on a train journey to Paddington station. Then, we learnt about all the fantastic landmarks which can be found in our capital city, and tried to build and draw these ourselves.

I have noticed a lot of us are keeping up with our reading and doodle maths so well done you guys! Keep it up.

Just one more week to go before the Christmas break, let's make this week the best one yet.

  • Home Learning

    Published 24/11/21, by Katie Sturman

You should have now received an email with your child's Seesaw log in details. This is the platform we will be using to assign any home learning activities to those who are currently learning from home.

Please note, this is only required for children who are at home isolating with a confirmed case of COVID, or are waiting their PCR results.
We only expect children to complete these tasks if they are feeling well enough to do so.

I will be uploading a 'home learning mat' onto our blog at the start of each week. This outlines the activities I have set and will contain links to anything which cannot be accessed on the Seesaw homepage.
I have attached the learning map for the remainder of the week to this blog.

  • PJ Day and Diwali Celebrations!

    Published 19/11/21, by Katie Sturman

What a fun day! Spending all day in our pjs AND celebrating Diwali this afternoon!

In RE, we have been learning about the Hindu celebration, Diwali. This afternoon we had a Diwali celebration where we created our own rangoli and Mehndi patterns and made Diwali cards.

All the class were super sensible with this activity, and I am very proud of their learning.

Have a restful weekend and keep going with your reading and doodles. There will be more discovery points up for grabs next Friday for those who are in the green zone!
