Important information: Jigsaw this term

Important information regarding jigsaw this next term

Dear Parent/Carer,

This school year, we have been using Jigsaw, our PSHE (Personal, Social, and Health Education) programme, which takes a mindful and inclusive approach to supporting children’s personal development.

Through these lessons, children have built emotional literacy, self-esteem, and a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships with others and the wider world. You may have already heard your child mention Jigsaw Friends or Calm Me time, which are key elements of the programme.

In the Summer Term, we focus on two units: Relationships and Changing Me. After the half-term break, we will begin the Changing Me unit. This includes two or three age-appropriate lessons in each year group that explore the changes associated with puberty and, in later years, human reproduction. These lessons are an important part of our safeguarding curriculum.

Please be assured that the content is tailored to be age-appropriate. Younger year groups focus on learning correct terminology for body parts and laying the foundation for future learning. In Years 5 and 6, the lessons explore puberty and reproduction in more detail.

Year 4 Coverage and Key Vocabulary

  • Lesson 1: Unique Me – personal, unique, parents, characteristic
  • Lesson 2: Having a Baby – sperm, egg, penis, testicles, vagina, womb, ovaries, making love, having sex, sexual intercourse, conception, fertilise
  • Lesson 3: Girls and Puberty – puberty, periods, menstruation

We encourage you to talk with your child about these lessons. Open conversations at home can reinforce their learning and provide a safe space for them to ask any questions they may have.

If you have any questions or concerns about the upcoming lessons, please don’t hesitate to speak with me or a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
