The last few weeks of Autumn 1

Find out what we got up to!

The children  have settled and adapted well to the transition from KS1 to KS2 and have had a wonderfully fun Autumn 1.

What have we been learning about in class over the past few weeks?

Writing:

We have recently finished looking at suspense writing (creating a story where something bad may happen). We have watched suspense videos, looked at examples of suspense stories and created word banks based on this unit of writing and added to our classroom washing line. The children have been incredibly engaged and enthused. I will upload  pictures of the final results of our 'Zelda Claw' writing unit as I am so proud of the children's love of writing this half-term, and it really shows!

Spelling:

We have learnt the first three units of our spelling curriculum - adding the prefixes 'dis' and 'un',, adding 'im' to root words and  adding the suffix 'ous ' to root words. We upload spellings and red words (high frequency words) every week on your child’s doodlespell extras. We have spotted many children completing their spelling assignments which is fantastic. So, thank you for your support.

It is crucial that the children practice these spellings and remain in their green zone on doodles as this will not only reinforce and consolidate their spelling lessons but also support their writing in School. I constantly reupload old units as it's important these spellings are reinforced and consolidated (I have added the first 3 spelling units we have looked at below).

Reading:

We have now finished reading ‘The worst witch’ by Jill Murphy and will be looking at a new class text (please see upcoming blog to find out what this is!).

In addition to our class reading, we check home schoolbooks every week so please ensure:

- Homeschool books are brought into school everyday

-Your child is reading alongside you 3 x a week.

- Reading is recorded in their home school book.

- You are working on your bronze reading award challenges (these can be found at the back of your child’s home school book).

* If your child is no longer in phonics, they can change their own books using our classroom library. If your child is attending phonics their book will be changed every week by their teaching adult.

Maths:

We have finished our unit on place value and have started our unit on addition and subtraction. Every week I  upload doodlemaths extras based on what we have been learning in class (be sure to check your child's 'assignments'). We have noticed lots of the children are completing their doodle extras which is also brilliant! Our hard work must have paid off as we are often top of the class doodle board! Thank you for supporting this.

Now it is time for children to ensure they are confident with their 2, 5 and 10 timetables as well as beginning to learn their 3, 4 and 8 timestables.

Science:

We have finished our topic based on ‘animals and humans’ and have already learnt about the five main food groups, what nutrients we need, different animal diets, invertebrates and much more. Take a look at our final task (to write everything we could remember about this unit in small groups)

Geography:

We have finished focusing on extreme weather and have learnt about different types of extreme weather such as hurricanes, droughts, and tornadoes. We have also learnt about how storms affect us and what happens when there is extreme heat and cold. Let's look at what the children have remembered, why not ask them about our topic?

It’s been a busy half term in Year 3 and I am so proud of how we have started the Autumn Term! Be sure to check the blog in the upcoming week to read about our new topic after half term!

Have a lovely well-earned half-term!
