A busy few weeks in Y3!

Find out what we've been doing over the recent weeks in Y3!

Year 3 has been busy bees! Pankhurst class have been preparing for our Christmas performances, making decorations for our Christmas trees, writing our final versions of defeating a monster story, discussing their learning with visitors (who were incredibly impressed with their rich vocabulary) and meeting a visitor from BGS to consolidate our learning from our Geography unit this half-term! In addition to this, we have got an exciting Peter Pan panto trip booked for the end of half-term too!

Christmas bits and bobs:

We have also been learning our Christmas songs ready for the Christmas performance next week and making the finishing touches. Year 3 and 4 are learning songs from the 1960s- ‘Return to sender’ and ‘I wanna hold your hand’.

This week we have been hanging our Christmas decorations onto our whole school Christmas tree. Doesn’t it look beautiful?

Maths: Multiplication and division:

The children are nearly halfway through their multiplication and division unit. We are focusing on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. I can see lots of children are learning these and having a go at their doodle extra assignments.  Which is fantastic. Please keep this up as it will support you greatly in school. Little and often is always best!

Here are some fab websites to learn timestables:

Literacy: Writing a defeating the monster story and our new unit after half-term

In Literacy for the past few weeks we have retold the story of ‘Jack and the beanstalk’ through using a story map (key pictures used to denote parts of the story). We’ve learnt how to use a range of punctuation and collected fantastic vocabulary throughout the unit. We then moved onto the innovation stage, this is where we change and edit some parts of the Jack and the beanstalk. This week, after planning our new stories, we will be writing our final drafts of a defeating the monster story.

After half term we will be looking at writing portal stories, stories that transport us to another world-think Alice and Wonderland or Narnia! Look at some of the fairy doors that magically appeared underneath the Christmas tree. The children began thinking-what might be behind the door? What might we see or hear? And who could we meet? I was amazed by their imaginations!

Additionally, please ensure your child is reading at home at least 3 x a week and this is recorded in their home schoolbooks. Little and often makes the world of difference!

Geography: We had a visitor from BGS!

In Geography, we finished our topic based on volcanoes and earthquakes and the children were able to talk about the topic in great detail! We met with Marli from BGS who taught us about how to recognise the 3 different types of rock-igneous, metaphoric and sedimentary. We also looked at some incredible fossils and learnt how to identify these and match these to their plant/animal. Next week Marli will be coming in again and talking about how communities live near areas where volcanoes and earthquakes are common. Have a look at some of our pictures below!

Take care,

Miss F
