Phonics Screening Check - Parent Info

Information about the Key Stage 1 Phonics Screening Check.

During the week beginning 10th June, Year 1 children will take part in a phonics check. In this check they will decode and read 40 words. 20 of these words are real words and 20 of them are nonsense words. There is a little alien image next to the nonsense words, so the children know they are not real.

We encourage children to read words using the routine Special Friends, Fred Talk, Read the word which they use every day in school.

How to help your child prepare

  • Listen to your child read their phonics book every night.
  • Practise speedily reading the Set 2 and Set 3 sounds in their little yellow practise books
  • Watch the Virtual Classroom videos which will be emailed out on a Friday

Although this is a compulsory test, the children are very familiar with the routines and will complete this on a 1:1 basis with Mrs Westie. We have already had lots of practise!

Please do give us a shout if you have any questions.
