  • RATE YOUR PANCAKE!

    Published 28/02/22, by Kerry Inglis

This week in school, we will be finding out about 'Shrove Tuesday' and what 'lent' means to Christians.

To celebrate Shrove Tuesday, we will be sharing the story of 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes', which links wonderfully with our previous topic on Fairy tales and revisits some of the characters we are familiar with. He could also be the wolf from our current book of the week ...'The Three Little Pigs'.

We will find out how you make a pancake by looking at the recipe and talking about the ingredients.
We will be role-playing using all the special equipment and pretend ingredients in our home corner and even sampling a small section of pancake with our favourite toppings! Mmmmm! 😋

At home, if you make pancakes please send your photographs on Tapestry.
Can you rate your pancake out of 10?
Can you carefully count how many toppings you add to your delicious pancake?
What's your favourite flavour combination? Is it sweet or savoury?

We can't wait to see your pancakes and find out what you've rated them.

  • THE THREE LITTLE PIGS...

    Published 19/02/22, by Kerry Inglis

Hello Little Explorers, and welcome back! We hope you've all had a wonderful half-term.

We have been blown away with your bake off snaps and how many of you have got involved in our challenge. Big thank you for sending in your delicious bakes, we are excited to share them in school and add them to our home corner, so the children can hopefully role-play their baking experiences.

So our new topic, 'build it up'  is kicking off with a classic fairytale... 'I'll huff, I'll puff, I'll blow your house down'. You've guessed it, it's The Three Little Pigs! We will be sharing this tale for two weeks and reading lots of different versions, comparing how the stories are similar and different.

We will be becoming storytellers by re-telling the story and making up our own adapted versions using lots of acting out and expression!

In phonics, we are continuing re-visiting our Set 1 sounds to help us apply them confidently in our reading and writing. We will be focusing on a sound a day. Have a go at applying these sounds using your speedy sounds card pack- can you create and blend any words? Super spicy challenge- can you write any words?
    Week 1 sounds re-cap (21.02.22 - 24.02.22)

    Week 2 sound re-cap (28.02.22 - 04.03.22)

We are consolidating some of our red tricky words too.  We will be playing lots of games to help us recognise and spot these words as we have to learn them by sight and not sound them out (hence them being so tricky!)

The children love singing along to this video in class, sing along at home!

We will be working on our drawing skills, drawing blueprint designs of our dream house, drawing and labelling our own fairytale and books and making 'Big Bad Wolf' wanted posters. Have a go at practising drawing skills with this fun let's get squiggling episode.

To help us delve into our building topic, we will be looking at homes from around the world and talking about the materials they are made from. Can you look at your house...  What has it been built with? Can you spot any different materials?

We will be exploring materials and their different purposes and properties, for example why windows are made of glass, so that we can see through them.
Can you go on a material hunt around your house... What different materials can you find? Can you name them? Can you find something that is wooden, metal, plastic, rubber, material? Describe what it feels like... Hard, soft, bendy, smooth etc.

In maths, we are starting our 'Building 9 and 10'  topic, check out our white rose scheme of learning below. Watch this Numberblocks episode to help compare and combine quantities. Be sure to check out your doodle maths challenges and get collecting those stars.

We will be exploring and describing the properties of 2D shapes. Can you spot any 2D shapes at home? What shape is a clock, a book, your television? Go on a shape hunt and share what you find on tapestry.

We will be moving and grooving each morning to these jazzy dance n beats tunes...

As always, we LOVE seeing what you are getting up to at home. Have a go at one of the 'Three Little Pigs' challenges below, send in your shape snaps or what materials you discover around the house.

  • Our New Big Idea... 'BUILD IT UP'

    Published 17/02/22, by Kerry Inglis

    Build it up

In the 'Build It Up' project, your child will explore structures in the world around them. They will learn about materials and their properties and will have the chance to work independently and in groups to design and make marvellous structures. We will also be looking at animals and how they are amazing architects building their own homes.

    Supporting your child at home

    • Take a walk in the local area. Look at and talk about the buildings and other structures you see.
    • Talk about the materials from which their house is made, such as brick, stone or wood.
    • Take a large cardboard box and see what you can create together.
    • Share and discuss our big idea's poster below (see clearer image with PDF attached below).

  • THE FOUNDATION HALF TERM BAKE OFF!

    Published 11/02/22, by Kerry Inglis

This week, the children have absolutely loved making, baking and decorating their gingerbread people. Due to their excitement... We thought we would embrace the baking spirit and set a half-term challenge to bake something together. This could be a box mix, scones, cookies, cupcakes... It can be anything at all, just as long as it is delicious!

Please send a snap of your baked goodies on tapestry for us to share in our show and tell sessions when we are back.

Have a wonderful half-term and HAPPY BAKING!  🍰

  • THE GINGERBREAD MAN & THE FAIRYTALE DISASTER!

    Published 04/02/22, by Kerry Inglis

Wow, wow, wow! What fabulous storytellers your children are becoming. We are really enjoying our 'Once upon a time' topic, and it is wonderful to see them re-telling stories with great expression in their play. Ask them what story they have enjoyed the most and see if they can re-tell you one. Snow White, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and The Ugly Duckling are the classic fairy tales we have shared.

’Run, run as fast as you can… You can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man!’’ Can you guess what our story of the week will be? Of course… It’s The Gingerbread Man!

We will also be rounding off our topic by sharing some mixed up fairy tales and having a go at creating our own! We will be sharing this story and seeing which familiar characters we can spot.

Our phonics for the next few weeks is going to be consolidating all of our RWI set 1 sounds to give the children an extra boost when applying their reading and writing skills.

We will be revisiting these in lots of different ways and focusing on a sound a day to help them stick in our long-term memory. We will be looking at the shapes of the letters and having a go at the formation. Some F2 children will be focusing on the skill of 'Fred in your head' where you don't say the sounds aloud and blend in your head until the word on the page pops out.

This week our five sounds we will be embedding are:

Can you have a go at forming these letters at home? You could use your speedy sound cards to create and blend some words (sad, mad, sit, mats).

For those at home who are confident with their set 1 sounds... Check out this alphablocks episode where you can blend some longer words. Have a go at our 'I spy and read' sheet for an extra challenge.

This week we will be becoming scientists and learning the words 'absorbent' and 'waterproof' along with 'float' and 'sink'. We will be exploring why the Gingerbread Man didn't want to swim across the river... And experimenting making our own rafts to help him cross our water tray without getting wet!

You could collect some objects at home (waterproof ones!) and predict whether they will float or sink before testing them out your sink, bath or a big container.  We would love to see your photos of this - send them in on Tapestry, and we will share them in class. Along with any gingerbread man inspired activities you might like to do (see PDF's at the bottom of the page).

In maths, we are continuing our white rose focus on growing, 6, 7 & 8. We will be digging deeper by combining two groups and finding out how many altogether. Check out this numberblocks episode to look at the part-whole model. We will be using this model in school to help us visualise combining numbers to find the total.

Have a listen to these jazzy tunes (they are both especially catchy and may just be playing in your head all day 😅)
