  • THE GINGERBREAD MAN!

    Published 20/01/23, by Kerry Inglis

Wow, wow, wow! What fabulous storytellers your children are becoming. We are really enjoying our ‘Books, Books, Brilliant books’ topic.

It is wonderful to see the children confidently re-calling stories in their play and drawings with brilliant expression!

’Run, run as fast as you can… You can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man!’ Can you guess what our story of the week will be? Of course… It’s The Gingerbread Man! Have a listen to the tale we will be sharing:

We will also be singing these jazzy tunes:

This week we will be becoming scientists and learning the words 'absorbent' and 'waterproof' (F2) along with 'float' and 'sink' (F1). We will be exploring why the Gingerbread Man didn't want to swim across the river... And experimenting making our own rafts to help him cross our water tray without getting wet!

You could collect some objects at home (waterproof ones!) and predict whether they will float or sink before testing them out your sink, bath or a big container.  We would love to see your photos of this - send them in on Tapestry, and we will share them in our show and tell sessions. Along with any gingerbread man inspired activities you might like to do- especially delicious gingerbread baking! (see PDF's at the bottom of the page).

F1 will be exploring the number 4 and the different ways the number four can be made-here are some activities you could try at home:

In F2, we are starting our new white rose focus on growing, 6, 7 & 8. We will be digging deeper by combining two groups and finding out how many altogether. Check out this numberblocks episode to look at the part-whole model. We will be using this model in school to help us visualise combining numbers to find the total.

    • F2- You are doing so well with your doodles! We are in the top 3 on the score board. Look at all of those stars you have collected - 1035! ðŸ¤©ðŸŒŸ well done, keep up the super work!

  • Celebrating the Chinese/Lunar New Year...

    Published 13/01/23, by Kerry Inglis

What an exciting week we have ahead! We are celebrating Chinese New Year! We will be finding out how and why this tradition is celebrated, sharing stories and joining in with some celebrations ourselves.

The Lunar New Year is celebrated by many different cultures and many different places. For people in China and Chinese communities around the world, the New Year celebration is full of fireworks, the colour red, and delicious food. But what’s the story behind this celebration? Watch this video to find out about what the children will be talking about next week:

Here's Abbie and her brother preparing for Chinese New Year:

Here are our words of the week that we will be sharing with the children:

(F2) Please see your children's reading diary for how you can support their blending at home - this might be practising their speedy sound cards (or certain ones), practising letter formation of the letters they find tricky, sharing a blending book together or sharing their reading book/ditty story.

We are beginning to blend sounds together to read longer words... Check out this alphablocks episode where they can blend some longer words. If your children are confident with their set 1 sounds, they could also have a go at our 'I spy and read' sheet for an extra challenge.

(F1) In F1, we are helping the children to develop their phonological awareness (helping them to distinguish sounds). This week, they will be playing the beat/syllables in words using our wooden claves and other instruments.

    E.g Kangeroo- kan-ger-roo (3 beats)

    Bear- bear (1 beat)

    Alligator - al-i-gat-or (4 beats)

    Caterpillar - cat-er-pillar (3 beats)

The children will also be clapping the syllables in their names.

    • The children have been FABULOUS storytellers following on from our stories last week (We're going on a Bear Hunt and Goldilocks and the Three Bears). We have been BLOWN AWAY by the wonderful story language they are using and how confidently they can recall the stories... We have also LOVED their different voices for characters. Keep up the wonderful work Little Dreamers!
    • (F2) Most PE kits are in school, but if we could make sure all children have their PE kit in school for our lessons which will be on Wednesday mornings - thank you.
    • Remember to send in a photo of your child's favourite book/books on tapestry if you haven't already done so- the children really enjoy talking about these in show and tell sessions.

Thank you for your continued support ðŸ˜Š

  • WE'RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT & GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS

    Published 05/01/23, by Kerry Inglis

Hopefully you've had chance to check out our new big idea for this half term: Books, Books, Brilliant Books!

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be sharing these texts and answering our big idea question's

    • Can you re-tell a story?
    • Can you describe the setting of a story? (using We're Going on a Bear Hunt to support this)
    • Can you describe the characters in a story? (Using Goldilocks and the Three Bears to support this).

We will be drawing simple story maps and acting out the stories to help the children remember and re-call them.

This week we have started sharing the brilliant book 'We're going on a Bear Hunt',  the children are loving it! They are already so confident re-calling the different settings and story language used in the book (e.g. 'thick oozy mud' 'deep cold river'). Next week, we will be going on a 'Bear Hunt adventure' across school to try and find a bear ourselves!

Have a listen to the story at home (and Michael Rosen, the Author performing it himself!)

Here is the Goldilocks and the Three Bears Story that we will be sharing in school:

We will also be singing this song linked to the Goldilocks story:

Here is the vocabulary that we will be sharing with the children for 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'

    • Remember to enjoy sharing stories and record these in your reading diary-the school expectation is to read at least 3 times a week and get along the way to collecting the next reading award!
(F2) practising your speedy sound cards, or doing any reading or writing activity can also count as an entry.
    • Can you send in a picture on tapestry sharing your children's favourite story? We will be using these throughout our topic and sharing them during show and tell sessions.
    • (F2) Keep up with those doodles! Little and often. Mrs King is monitoring which class is in the lead.

  • Our New Big Idea: Books, Books, Brilliant Books!

    Published 02/01/23, by Kerry Inglis

Over the next half-term our topic is: Books, Books, Brilliant Books!

We will be sharing wonderful stories with the children, repeating them over and over, so the children can familiarise themselves with the story, gaining the confidence to talk about them and re-call the key parts.  We will also be talking about the different settings and characters that we discover in stories, and having lots of props in the classroom, so the children can recreate them and invent their own narratives.

Check out our big ideas' poster to share with your children at home (a clearer version is attached as a PDF below)
