  • What we have been doing in Year One

    Published 30/09/22, by Katie Sturman

We have had a busy and exciting first term in Year 1!

I'd like to start off by saying a big well done to those who have been keeping up with your reading at home. It is also great to see lots of you in the green zone on doodle maths! It is having a positive impact on your learning in school. Keep up practising our letter and number formation - it is getting better!

So far this year, we have been on a woodland walk identifying the deciduous and evergreen trees around school, have placed toys from the past and present in chronological order and have been introduced to algorithms in our computing lessons.

One of the highlights for me so far this term (and I think a lot of the children's!), was watching everyone share their favourite toys with their classmates. They shared the information about what their toy was made from, it's function and whether it had any exciting features like movement, sound or flashing lights! When they weren't sharing, the children sat and listened to their friends wonderfully. I felt very proud!

In art this half-term we have been looking at the works by photographer Irving Penn and painter Paul Cezanne. We have replicated their work by taking our own still life photographs (see above) and completed observational drawings of fruit. This week, we had a lovely arty afternoon where we explored mixing colours and used our new skills to paint a fruit bowl.
Lots of teachers around school (including Mrs King) have commented on how fantastic their art work is. I am so excited to share the finished product with you before half-term!

    Dates for the diary:

    • Friday 7th October - KS1 Movie night
    • Monday 10th October and Wednesday 12th October - parent's evening
    • Thursday 6th October - Historical artefact visitor**
**We will communicate with you on Monday whether we have had enough parental support to allow this to go ahead. Please be assured that we only ever aim to offer experiences which would really enhance your child's understanding and enjoyment of a topic. This would not be something we would be able to offer in school which is why we have invited a special expert visitor to come and work with us. If you have any questions about this day, please catch me on Monday morning. Thank you.

  • History Visitor 6.10.22

    Published 13/09/22, by Katie Sturman

On Thursday 6th October we have got a special visitor (Tommy Top Hat!) coming in to school to tell us all about toys from the past.

We will have the opportunity to play with lots of indoor and outdoor toys throughout the day and Tommy will tell us how they were made, what they were made out of, and how old they are!

In the afternoon, we will play some parlour games and have the chance to ask Tommy lots of questions about the toys. We will then discuss the difference between toys from the past and toys from the present, and have a vote about which toys are our favourite!

As Tommy Top Hat is an external visitor (and he is bringing lots of special toys for us to play with), there is a small cost of £10 for each child to take part. Please pay this on Eduspot by Monday 26th September.
If you have any issues with making payments on Eduspot, please speak to Mrs Buttery

Please send your child into school in their school uniform, we want to represent ourselves beautifully to our visitor!

I am really excited, and I am sure your children cannot wait to meet Tommy and see his fantastic range of toys from the past.

  • Our 1st week in Year One

    Published 12/09/22, by Katie Sturman

We have had a great start to the year!

Last week we were lucky enough to watch the cyclists race past for the Tour of Britain! Take a look at Mr Cresswell's blog to see a glimpse of KPNS on the news!

We enjoyed looking at our friends' baby photos when we learnt about the stages from childhood to adulthood in history. Thank you for sending your child in with these they really helped enhance our lesson. a reminder: your child may bring their favourite toy in to school for our history lesson this Thursday. I just request that you refrain from sending your child in with electronic devices.

I have been really impressed at how quickly your children are settling in to our Year 1 routines and how beautifully they are playing with each other. They should be very proud of themselves.

I'm sure you will enjoy taking a sneak peek at some of the photos I have taken over the course of the week. Check out our gallery here

  • Spellings and handwriting in Year 1

    Published 07/09/22, by Katie Sturman

    Spelling
Our spelling quiz's on a Friday involve your child writing out their spellings.

There are lots of fun ways for you to help your child practise their spellings! I have attached a mat of ideas which you can use to help learning fun and interactive!

In school, we use 'Fred fingers' to help children spell words. The routine goes like this:

    1) Say the word to your child and ask them to repeat it.
    2) Ask your child to count how many sounds are in that word and show this number on their fingers (for example the word sniff has 4 sounds s-n-i-ff so they will show you four fingers).
    3) Ask your child to say each sound and pinch their fingers as they go.
    4) They should now write this down.

    Handwriting
Don't worry if at this stage your child's letters are a little wobbly, we are working hard as a whole class to improve our handwriting!
We will have handwriting sessions every Friday before spellings where we will focus on two letters a week.
    This half-term we will be mastering the letters: m, a, s, d, t, i, n, p, g, o.

I have attached a sheet which details how these letters are formed (including the rhymes they learn in school!). Please take some time to practise these with your child at home.
