Dear Parents/Carers,

In Year 4, children will begin to learn the accurate names for private body parts as part of our Jigsaw (PSHE) ‘Changing me’ sessions. As some of this content may be new to your child, or may prompt questions at home, we wanted to provide you with an overview of what will be covered.

his unit will begin in the week commencing 1st June 2026, and you may wish to discuss the topic with your child beforehand.

Vocabulary Covered

Children will be introduced to age-appropriate scientific vocabulary, including:

change, birth, uterus (womb), nutrients, puberty, testicles, sperm, penis, ovaries, egg (ovum), vagina, stereotypes, roles

All resources used are provided by Jigsaw and include illustrations only (no photographs).

Our Approach

We approach these lessons in a sensitive and supportive way. Children are encouraged to understand that:

  • Private body parts are special and personal, not something to feel embarrassed or ashamed about
  • They have a right to privacy and respect for their bodies

To reinforce this, sessions will be supported by the ‘PANTS’ / Pantosaurus resources (Talk PANTS: Conversation to help keep children safe | NSPCC(opens in new tab)), helping children understand that:

  • Their private parts belong to them
  • No one has the right to see or touch them without permission

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
