This year, all Year 4 children will take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The MTC is a national assessment set by the Department for Education to determine how fluently children can recall their multiplication facts up to 12 × 12.
The check is completed online and usually takes place during June. Children are given 25 multiplication questions and have a limited amount of time to answer each one. The purpose of the check is to ensure that pupils have a secure knowledge of their times tables, which is essential for success in many areas of mathematics as they move into upper Key Stage 2.
To support children in preparing for the MTC, we expect all pupils to practise their times tables every day EdShed, as outlined in the information letter sent home. Daily practice helps children improve both their accuracy and speed, building confidence with multiplication facts.
As part of our homework expectations, children should complete at least one session of times table practice each day. Regular practice will make a significant difference to their progress and readiness for the MTC.
If a child does not complete their times tables practice at home, they will be asked to complete it during Doodle Club at breaktime. This ensures that all children have the opportunity to maintain their practice and continue developing these important mathematical skills.
