This half term, our little learners will be exploring the exciting world of buildings and structures through stories, play and hands-on investigations.
We’ll be enjoying much-loved tales such as The Three Little Pigs 🐷 and The Three Billy Goats Gruff 🐐. These stories will help us talk about questions like:
-
Why did one house fall down?
-
What makes something strong?
-
How can we build a bridge that doesn’t wobble?
Through lots of practical exploration, the children will:
-
🧱 Build towers, houses and bridges using blocks, junk modelling, construction toys and natural materials
-
✋ Explore different materials… Which are hard, soft, bendy, smooth or rough?
-
💧 Investigate what happens when we test our structures (Will it stay up? Will it fall down? Are they waterproof?
-
👷 Learn about the important job that architects, engineers and builders do… Having a go at being one themselves!
👀 Check out our ‘Big Ideas’ poster below to see the key questions, stories and vocabulary we’ll be sharing throughout this topic.
💡 Ways you could support our topic at home…
You can help bring our topic to life by:
-
🏠 Building with LEGO, blocks, cardboard boxes. Making dens with cushions and blankets, talking about what makes structures strong
-
🌧️ Exploring materials around the house… Which things are hard, soft, rough, smooth, strong or waterproof?
-
🌉 Looking at different buildings and bridges when you’re out and about… What shapes can you see? What do you think they’re made from?
-
🏙️ If you spot any exciting buildings or structures while you’re out and about, put a photo on Tapestry so we can share them with the children in school.
And if your child creates any amazing models or structures at home, we would love to see those too 🧱✨
