🌟 Year 4 Key Information 🌟

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have a busy and exciting half term ahead in Year 4. Below is an overview of what your child will be learning across the curriculum, along with some important reminders and key dates for your diary.

📚 Literacy

Our class text this half term is Adventures in Sandy Cove.
Using this exciting adventure story as inspiration, the children will be exploring characters, settings and key events in detail. We will be focusing on understanding adventure writing and what makes them effective.

Throughout the unit, the children will develop their storytelling skills by looking closely at  story language and using adventurous and exciting vocabulary. By the end of the unit, they will be writing their own adventure tale, applying everything they have learned from the text.

➕ Maths

The children will be building on their existing knowledge while developing confidence and fluency across several key areas.

We will be learning about decimals, including recognising and writing tenths and hundredths and understanding their place value. The children will also be working with money, where they will practise converting between pounds and pence, adding and subtracting amounts, and solving real‑life problems.

In addition, we will be exploring time, focusing on reading and interpreting timetables, comparing durations and solving time‑based problems.

🌱 Science

In science this half term, Year 4 will be learning about States of Matter.

The children will explore solids, liquids and gases and develop their understanding of how materials can change between these states.

The children will:

  • Identify and classify materials as solids, liquids or gases
  • Compare the properties of different states of matter
  • Observe how materials change state, for example through melting, freezing and evaporation
  • Learn what happens during heating and cooling processes
  • Record observations using simple scientific vocabulary and diagrams

🌍 History

In history this half term, Year 4 will be continuing their learning through the Traders and Raiders unit.
Building on their previous work about the Anglo‑Saxons, the children will now move on to learning about the Vikings.

The children will explore:

  • Who the Vikings were and where they came from
  • Why the Vikings travelled, traded and raided
  • How Viking life compared to life in Anglo‑Saxon Britain
  • The impact the Vikings had on Britain, including settlements and culture
  • Key events and figures from the Viking period

Through stories, historical sources and discussion, the children will develop their understanding of chronology and learn how this period fits into British history. They will also compare different periods in history and begin to ask thoughtful questions about life in the past.
