I hope everyone has had a lovely and restful Easter break and that your children are ready to return for a busy summer term.
📚 What Will We Be Learning About?
This half-term, we are beginning two exciting new units in Geography and Science.
🌍 Geography – Sow, Grow and Farm
Children will learn:
- What is farming?
- Where are farms located around Keyworth?
- What type of farms are there around Keyworth and why?
- Why can’t we grow oranges in the UK?
- How and why is farming different around the world?
- What is trade and how does it relate to food?
We will also be exploring where our own food comes from. Please take a look at food packing from your weekly shop and send in a label if it has come from somewhere interesting.
🌱 Science – Living things and their habitats
Children will learn:
- What is the difference between living, dead and never alive?
- What is a life cycle? (Mammals)
- How do animals change during their life cycles?
- What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction in plants?
Children will also explore through VIPERS the significant conservationist Jane Goodall and Sir David Attenborough.

This half term we will continue to read Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho Yen then progress onto Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.
🏡 Homework Expectations
Thank you for your continued support with home learning. Here is a reminder of the expectations for Year 5:
📘 Reading
- Children should read at least 3 times a week at home.
- Please sign the home–school reading record each week.
- Your child could also complete their weekly reading by coming to Reading Lair from 8.30am every morning.
🔢 DoodleMaths & DoodleSpell
- Children should aim to stay in their Green Zone, which equals around 40 minutes of practice per week.
- We are starting our new spelling units in school this half term and these will be added onto doodles each week.
⭐ Gold Reading Challenge
- Please encourage your child to work toward their Bronze, Silver and Gold Reading Challenges, located at the back of their home–school book.
📝 Class Blog
- Don’t forget to check the class blog regularly to keep up with Year 5 news, photos and learning updates!
🏃♂️🏃♀️ P.E. Information
Year 5 will have P.E. sessions every Monday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon.
P.E. Kit:
- Red top
- Black shorts or joggers
- Trainers
- Jewellery must be removed
- Longer hair should be tied up
As some sessions will take place outdoors, please provide extra layers on colder days.
All clothing should be clearly named to avoid mix-ups.

Tuesday 28th April – Class field Trip to Ling’s Lane for our Geography topic. Volunteers are needed for this to happen. Please drop me a message or contact the school office if you are able to help.
Monday 11th May- Y6 SATs Week.
Tuesday 19th May- KPNS Musical Showcase
Friday 22nd May- Break up for half term.
