This week, Year 6 had the chance to find out what it’s like to be in Antarctica. We had a talk from Steve who works for the British Antarctic Survey. He’s a meteorologist and sometimes travels to Antarctica to monitor weather conditions. He was in Antarctica just before Christmas and was able to share a video with the children showing what the inside of the research station looks like. He also talked to them about how cold it gets in Antarctica, as well as about all the animals that can be found there. The coldest recorded temperature in the Antarctic is -89.2 degrees celsius!
There are 17 different types of penguin, but only 8 types live in the Antarctic. The rest live elsewhere in the Southern hemisphere. There are also lots of sea creatures, such as sea spiders.
Whilst it is too cold to live in the Antarctic permanently, lots of people work out there for several weeks at a time. There are lots of scientists, but also lots of other jobs that are useful such as cooks, electricians, plumbers, doctors and pilots. You can also visit as a tourist, but it is very expensive.
