We had a brilliant day learning about WWII last week. Mr Adby taught the children two dances that were very popular during WWII – the Lambeth Walk and the Jitterbug. Dancing was important to people during WWII because it was a way of them distracting themselves and relaxing.

Mr Adby brought lots of genuine WWII artefacts with him and the children were able to look at real gas masks, lanterns and clothing as well as a tool to help people polish buttons and a tie press! In the afternoon, the children learnt about rationing, in particular which foods were rationed and how much one person was allowed of each item per week. They also got to use a slate and chalk – paper was also rationed during the war, so children who attended school would have reverted to using these instead!
