School Curriculum

Unlocking Every Child’s Potential

Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum ensures learning is effective, exciting and above all, relevant to the needs of our children.

We aim for all pupils to secure firm foundations in English and Mathematics while acquiring a growing understanding and excellence in other subjects. Teaching early reading is a key priority as we know it unlocks children's ability to access all curriculum areas. Our knowledge-based and progressive curriculum offers a broad range of subjects building from Early Years through to Key Stage 2. We believe in bringing learning to life with an emphasis on engaging and purposeful learning that prepares our pupils for secondary school and life beyond.

Keyworth Primary aims to provide a curriculum that is engaging, balanced and relevant. While emphasis is placed on children learning core skills of English and Maths, we place great value on developing the ‘whole child’ and provide an exciting and knowledge-based programme of study that meets, and exceeds, the requirements of the National Curriculum. We value each subject, recognising and teaching them as separate disciplines; our children will learn how to be historians, scientists, artists, etc so they understand separate subject elements and are well-prepared for future study in all subjects. Children learn all National Curriculum subjects, together with RE and RSHE. In addition, we focus on children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development (SMSC) through enriching the curriculum in a variety of ways, including involvement in the local, national and international communities.

From the day children join our Nursery, aged 3, the curriculum is designed to be knowledge focused and promote high engagement, to motivate children to learn by offering a wide range of rich learning experiences that build on and develop their prior knowledge and expertise. Careful sequencing of the curriculum, and regular opportunities for children to revisit prior learning, ensures that children's knowledge and understanding develops progressively from EYFS until they move onto secondary school.

Our aim is to allow children to deepen their knowledge within each individual subject and encourage them to access specific skills linked to each subject. We use Knowledge Organisers and spaced retrieval techniques such as mini quizzes performed over a period of time to ensure children are applying the knowledge and skills learnt to deepen their understanding and have the confidence to make links between their learning.

Our curriculum is designed to offer children experiences that will develop their cultural capital, extend their vocabulary, enhance their self-esteem and ignite their curiosity to become life-long learners with high personal aspirations. To support out curriculum, we offer extensive enrichment opportunities including trips, residentials, visits from specialists, clubs, themed days or weeks and inter-school activities.

Every subject has a champion, in the form of a subject leader, who ensures their subject is being taught effectively. Subject leaders have been instrumental in writing our Intent documents that inform class teachers' planning and delivery of individual subjects - please see the separate sections of this page for more information about individual subjects.
