Spring 1 – Key Information for Year 3🌸
Hello and welcome back!
I hope you all had a restful and joyful half-term break with your families. As we dive into the Spring term, I’m excited to share what’s ahead for Year 3. This half-term is packed with exciting learning opportunities, enrichment activities, and plenty of fun!
To help keep you informed, I’ve put together this blog with key updates on curriculum coverage, PE/swimming days, homework expectations, and ways you can support us in school.
📚 Curriculum Highlights

This half-term, we’ll be exploring:
- History- We’ll journey back thousands of years to discover how early humans lived during the Stone Age. Children will learn about: The three main periods: Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic. How people survived by hunting, gathering, and later farming. The development of tools and weapons made from stone. How the transition from hunter-gatherers to farmers changed communities forever. We’ll also go on a trip to Creswell Crags to apply our knowledge please see blog: Y3 trip To Creswell Crags- 4th February 2026 – Keyworth Primary & Nursery School
- Science: We will learn that light helps us see, it travels in straight lines, and shadows are made when something blocks the light.
- Class Text: The great flood and The great cave by Terry Deary. Set at the end of the Ice Age, this story explores how early humans coped with dramatic climate changes, rising water levels, and survival challenges. It introduces themes like adaptation, tribal life, and early technology, helping children understand how people lived thousands of years ago.

You’ll find our History and Science Knowledge Organisers attached below, which outline the key learning for each subject. We’ve also included the spelling units we’ll be covering, including the statutory Orange Words for Years 3 and 4.
🏠 Homework Expectations
Here’s a quick reminder of our weekly homework routines:
- Reading: Please ensure your child reads at least 3 times a week at home. Don’t forget to sign their home-school reading record. You’re also warmly invited to join us in the Reading Lair to read together!
- DoodleMaths & DoodleSpell: Children should aim to stay in the Green Zone by completing around 40 minutes of practice per week. Please focus on the ‘assignments’ as this is what we are working on in class.
- Silver Reading Challenge: Encourage your child to work towards their Silver Challenge, found at the back of their reading record.
- Class Blog: Keep an eye on our blog for regular updates and snapshots of our learning journey!
🏊 PE & Swimming Days
- Swimming: Every Thursday afternoon. Children will walk to Keyworth Pool with Mrs Lees and other adults. Please see a previous blog from September about swimming.
