π Year 1 Key Information Blog β What Weβre Learning This Half Term π
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have a busy and exciting half term ahead in Year 1, full of creativity, curiosity, and handsβon learning. Below is an overview of what your child will be learning across the curriculum, along with some important reminders and key dates for your diary.
π Literacy
Our class text this half term is Peter and the Wolf.
Using this story as inspiration, the children will explore characters, settings, and events. We will focus on understanding warning tales and, by the end of the unit, the children will be writing their own warning tale, using simple story language and exciting vocabulary.
β Maths
In maths, we will be covering several key areas:
- Weight and Volume β comparing, measuring, and using the language of heavier/lighter and full/empty.
- Multiplication and Division β sharing and grouping objects.
- Fractions β finding halves and quarters of shapes and numbers.
We will use lots of practical activities and equipment to help build confidence and understanding.
π± Science
Our science learning will focus on plants. The children will:
- Name wild and garden plants, including trees
- Learn about the structure of a plant and label its parts
- Compare similarities and differences between plants
- Explore deciduous and evergreen plants
The children will also plant seeds, observe them as they grow, and label the different parts of the plant over time.
π Geography
In geography, we will be learning all about weather. Topics include:
- Weather patterns in the UK
- Creating and understanding a weather forecast
- Fieldwork and using simple weather equipment
- Using directional language
- Exploring weather around the British Isles and around the world
- Learning about the equator and the poles
π¨ Art
The children will be developing their creativity through:
- Painting skies
- Exploring marbling and Brusho
- Creating sun catchers using collage techniques
We will also be learning about the artist Vincent Van Gogh and drawing inspiration from his work.
βοΈ RE
In RE, our unit is From Creation to Shabbat, where the children will explore creation stories and the importance of rest and celebration in the Jewish faith.

- PE days are Tuesdays and Fridays
- Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school on these days
π Reading Awards
- Gold Awards are now open!
- Please continue to record each read in your childβs reading diary
- If your child is still collecting Bronze or Silver awards, keep going β they are doing brilliantly!
β Doodle Maths
Please support your child to access Doodle Maths a few times a week.
Just 10 minutes makes a huge difference in building confidence.
We also now have a Doodle Trophy in class for earning stars each week β something the children are very excited about!

- We leave at 9:50am and return at 10:40am
